In late 2023 and early 2024, Aspen Digital put out a public call for submissions of excellent descriptions of artificial intelligence (AI) in reporting from 2023. From hundreds of excerpts representing over 80 different publications ranging from student papers to international mainstream press, we chose 15 winners.
To better monitor coral reef health, some scientists are using machine learning to analyze these audio recordings. In 2022, Lamont and a team of researchers at the University of Exeter trained a machine learning algorithm using many recordings of healthy and unhealthy coral reefs. When they introduced a new set of audio recordings, the computer successfully identified reef health with a high rate of accuracy.
— Anna Waterman and Stephanee McCadney writing for Quill.org
In this excerpt, Waterman and McCadney center the humans using and developing the tool (“scientists”), specify what type of technology is being used (“machine learning”), and detail the technology’s purpose (“to monitor coral reef health”). The excerpt uses specific and accessible language to explain how the algorithm is built using audio recordings.
