In late 2023 and early 2024, Aspen Digital put out a public call for submissions of excellent descriptions of artificial intelligence (AI) in reporting from 2023. From hundreds of excerpts representing over 80 different publications ranging from student papers to international mainstream press, we chose 15 winners.
The agency said Amazon deployed Project Nessie in 2014 and has turned it on and off at least eight times between 2015 and 2019. In 2018 alone, Amazon used the algorithm to set prices for items that were viewed more than 400 million times by shoppers, according to the complaint.
In this excerpt, Hadero centers the corporate user of the tool (“Amazon”), specifies the tool being used (“Project Nessie”), and explains what the tool is being used to do (“set prices for items”). The author also uses language appropriate for non-living systems (“deployed” and “set”).
