EmailIn late 2023 and early 2024, Aspen Digital put out a public call for submissions of excellent descriptions of artificial intelligence (AI) in reporting from 2023. From hundreds of excerpts representing over 80 different publications ranging from student papers to international mainstream press, we chose 15 winners.
For example, the city of Newark, New Jersey, used risk terrain modeling (RTM) to identify locations with the highest likelihood of aggravated assaults. Developed by Rutgers University researchers, RTM matches crime data with information about land use to identify trends that could be triggering crimes.
What makes it great
In this excerpt, Sankin and Mattu center the technology developers (“Rutgers University researchers”) and the entity using the technology (“the city of Newark”), specify the type of technology being used (“risk terrain modeling”), and explain the use of the technology (“to identify locations of highest likelihood of aggravated assaults”). The authors also use language appropriate for non-living systems (“identify”).
