15 great descriptions of AI tools in action, selected from 100s of candidates representing 80+ publications worldwide.
In late 2023 and early 2024, Aspen Digital put out a public call for submissions of excellent descriptions of artificial intelligence (AI) in reporting from 2023. From hundreds of excerpts representing over 80 different publications ranging from student papers to international mainstream press, we chose 15 winners.
Yet, the use of AI techniques can produce dehumanizing results that should be avoided. Current AI tools often generate results that enhance social, racial, and gender biases, as well as produce visual errors that depict deformed human bodies. Any process that uses AI for identity protection should always have careful human curation and oversight, along with a deep understanding of the community and audience it serves.
— shirin anlen and Raquel Vazquez Llorente writing for WITNESS
In this excerpt, anlen and Vazquez Llorente imply a human user of the AI tool (“the use of”), use verbs and nouns appropriate for a non-living system (“generate” and “process”), and emphasize the limitations and oversight requirements of these systems. To make this even better, the authors could specify the type of AI tools they’re referencing in addition to how they’re used (“for identity protection”).
“Inclusive technological development hinges on our collective understanding of technology. That is why public conversations about AI are key, but we must ensure that they are accessible to those who will be most impacted by technological transformation. Only by integrating diverse perspectives at every stage of AI’s lifecycle can we ensure that AI respects and promotes human rights, rather than undermining them. Aspen Digital’s Reporting on AI Hall of Fame underscores this critical need for an accessible and nuanced public discourse on AI.”
— Raquel Vazquez Llorente
“Amidst relentless hype around synthetic media and generative AI, it’s critical to have discussions around AI harms and realities that help people understand actual realities. It’s critical to have AI commentary that downplays hyperbole and centers globally-relevant and community-led approaches on solutions.”
