In late 2023 and early 2024, Aspen Digital put out a public call for submissions of excellent descriptions of artificial intelligence (AI) in reporting from 2023. From hundreds of excerpts representing over 80 different publications ranging from student papers to international mainstream press, we chose 15 winners.
Many people already use AI regularly without realizing it—for example, individuals encounter AI through popular virtual assistants like Apple’s Siri and Google’s Assistant, quick translations of language, major online platforms such as Amazon and YouTube with recommendation algorithms, and tagging objects or people in images.
— Julie George writing for the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists
In this excerpt, George centers the people using the AI tools (“many people” and “individuals”) and specifies many accessible examples of AI tools people may come across in their day-to-day lives (“Apple’s Siri and Google’s Assistant”). To make this excerpt even stronger, the author could clarify that different AI tools are behind each of these systems (e.g., “already use many types of AI”).
“Artificial intelligence is not simply defined by technological innovation. At the core of artificial intelligence is the people – those who design, develop, and deploy various applications across all facets of society. It is both timely and imperative that we have accurate and accessible public conversations about this rapidly developing technology. The prominence of AI and rising investments in the United States call for continued dialogue, research, and discussion of responsible deployment of the technology both within the country and globally.”
— Julie George
